Description

After the HMS Herald anchored in Cloudy Bay on 16 June, Thomas Bunbury went ashore at Guard’s Cove but no rangatira signed. The next day (17 June) rangatira from the neighbouring coves came aboard the Herald and signed the Herald Sheet (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195648904). Bunbury, Edward Williams, and William Stewart also went ashore and gained further signatures. The names and signatures of those who signed can be viewed at www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/interactive/herald-bunbury-tre...

Those who signed included that of respected Ngāti Toa rangatira, Nohorua, and Rangitāne o Wairua leader, Ihaia Kaikoura. However Nohorua and other rangatira were wary of British intentions, fearing the loss of land. Nohorua only signed after his English son-in-law, Joseph Thoms, agreed to witness the signing ‘in order, as Nohorua said, should his grandchildren lose their land, their father might share the blame.’ The customary gift of blankets were turned down for fear that it might be seen as an admission of a land sale.

Bunbury now decided to proclaim sovereignty over Te Waipounamu (the South Island), on the basis of the sixteen signatures he had gathered there. At 2pm on 17 June, Bunbury and a group of marines landed at Horohora-Kakahu Island in Port Underwood, where Bunbury read a declaration of sovereignty. The Union Jack was raised on the pā, the Herald fired a 21-gun salute, and three cheers were given.

This is a Lands and Surveys plan of Horohora-Kakahu Island, which was modified and published in the Appendix to the journals of the House of Representatives 1913, C-6.
