TABULA/ ITINERARIA/ ex illustri/ PEUTINGERORUM / BIBLIOTHECA/ Quae Auguste Vindelicorum/ Beneficio/ Marci Velseri/ Septem Viri Augustani/ In Lucem/edita Incisione su rame colorata a mano, mm. 545 x 652 Si tratta dei primi due degli undici segmenti di cui si compone la cosiddetta Tabula Peutingeriana, copia medievale di una mappa itineraria dell’impero romano. La Tabula è conservata presso la Hofbibliotek di Vienna, sotto il nome di Codex Vindobonensis. Per la comprensione del cartiglio in alto a sinistra va ricordato che l’umanista Marcus Velserus (Augusta 1558-1614) fu colui che la riscoprì nel 1598 a casa di Konrad Peutinger, e l’affidò per la pubblicazione al suo amico Abraham Ortelius, uno dei più grandi cartografi fiamminghi, che però pochi giorni dopo morì. La Tabula venne pubblicata nello stesso anno,
