PART 6 A TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP OF THE REPUBLICK OF GENOUA,/ Taken from the Celebrated Spanish Map by CHAFFRION: with many Additions & Improvements by A DURY. Il titolo viene ripetuto in alto in italiano, francese e tedesco. Nell’elaborato cartiglio in basso a destra è la dedica del Dury allo scozzese Lord James Stewart MacKenzie, plenipotenziario di sua Maestà Britannica nel Regno di Sardegna. In basso a sinistra, al di sotto delle scale in miglia italiane, piemontesi, inglesi e in Leghe di Francia, si trova l’indicazione del luogo di stampa (Londra), della data (14 agosto 1783) e dello stampatore (W. Faden). Accanto a sinistra, le legende relative alle carte delle Isole di Corsica e di Sardegna riguardano le risorse minerarie ma principalmente confermano la concezione militare della mappa, annunciata fin dall’inizio dal richiamo al lavoro dello spagnolo José Chaffrion (1653-98), che fu tra l’altro ingegnere militare al servizio del governatorato di Milano. La struttura stessa della mappa, composta da 8 fogli colorati a mano risultati dalla stampa di altrettanti incisioni su rame e montati su tela a stacchi, conferma l’uso in guerra della carta. |
