Summary

Description

On 21 January 1951 twenty yachts left Wellington in a race to reach Lyttelton, but owing to weather conditions only one yacht finished. The Centennial yacht race was intended to celebrate the centenary of Canterbury, and was expected to take up to 5 days to complete. However the yachts quickly encountered a severe storm after leaving Wellington. Two yachts withdrew from the race, and while most others returned to Wellington to avoid the storm some yachts attempted to continue with the race.

After several days at sea, the six crew of the Astral were rescued from the yacht on 27 January. The wreckage of the Husky was found near Owhiro Bay, and her four crew were presumed drowned. The Tawhiri was the only yacht to officially finish the race, arriving in Lyttelton on 26 January.

The final yacht, the Argo (pictured), was never found and her crew of six were lost at sea. An extensive search was made by the RNZAF and civil aviation operators for the boat, and this map shows the 566,000 sq km area searched, at a cost of £70,000. The search was officially called off on 12 February after failing to find any sign of the missing yacht. A subsequent magisterial inquiry into the loss of the Argo found that a collision early in the race had damaged the yacht, and it had probably foundered around 23 or 24 January.

These archives come from a Marine Department file containing records relating to the Husky and Argo, and which were used in the magisterial inquiry. This inquiry also made a number of recommendations for the future conduct of ocean yacht races. The Marine Department was established under the Marine Act 1866 and was directly responsible to the Governor of the Colony. The department was initially responsible for the administration of marine law, which included lighthouse administration, enquiries into wrecks, quarantine, pilotage, examination of ships and regulation of loads of ships, and control of harbour administration.
