On March 13th, 1872, ;5,000 per year for threeyears was appropriated for the Library by the Legisla-ture, and by the act of March 15th,. 1876, the sum of12,500 was appropriated for finishing and refurnishingthe Library room. In 1890, the Library was removed to the third story of the new part of the Capitol. THE STATE ARSENAL. The building now used as the State Arsenal was for-merly the old State Prison. It is situate on Secondstreet, in the Sixth Ward of the city of Trenton, andhas on its front the following inscription : Labor, Silence, Penitence. The Penitentiary House, Erected by Legislative Authority. Richard Howell, Governor. In the XXII. year of American Independence, mdccxcvii. STATE LUNATIC ASYLUM. 121 was proposed tliat the old one be converted into an Arsenaltor the safe keeping of the arms and military property of thefe a e, which, previous to that time, had been kept in the oldfetate Bank, corner of Warren and Bank streets, with accoutre-ments and camp and garrison equipage at the State House.Afterthe removal ot the State convicts from the old prisonpermission was given to the county of Mercer to occupy it asa jail unril their jail, then in course of completion, was finishedand wiien it was again vacated it was converted into an arsenal!Among the stores, &c, at the Arsenal are one bronze gun,French, of the date of 1758; two bronze guns, English four^pounders, and two iron six-pounders. There is also one guncaptured at the battle of Trenton, December 26th, 1776 Sndtwo guns captured at Yorktown, October 19th, 1781.
