reds as before. The epididymisdoes not usually waste so soon, nor in thesame degree, as the body of the testicle. It sometimes, however, loses its charac-teristic appearance; and I have evenfound it reduced to a few fibrous threads. The fluid pressed out of the wastedtesticle and epididymis is entirely desti-tute of spermatic granules and sperma-tozoa. In many instances adipose tissueis deposited behind the tunica vaginalis, and encroaches on the epididymis, andthe posterior part of the testicle. Fattymatter is also found in the glandularsubstance. The structures composing thespermatic cord undergo a correspondingdiminution, the ere master muscle dis-appears, the nerves shrink, and the ves-sels are reduced in size and number. The vas deferens, though small, can gene-rally be injected with mercury as far asthe commencement of the epididymis, and sometimes the metalreaches the vasa efierentia.* The causes of atrophy of the testis are very various : deprivation * Mr. Curling, Op.cit.y-p. 65.
Text Appearing After Image:
Inflammation of tunicavaginalis, after application ofcaustic, the aperture madeby this is shown at *. Thereare flocculi of lymph on theserous surface of the testis.(From Mr. Curlings article.) 20 ABNOKMAL CONDITIONS OF THE TUNICA VAGINALIS. of its supply of blood from obliteration of the spermatic artery, injuries of the spinal cord, producing paraplegia, and probablytherewith the loss of the nervous influence necessary for the gland, inflammation of its tissue—especially syphilitic inflammation—varicocele, over-excitement of the organ, the long-continued useof iodine, which is said to affect the female breast similarly, tuber-cular elephantiasis, injuries to the back of the head and nape ofthe neck, the pressure of effusions, and of large hernise, neuralgia, and any wasting disease,—all appear, on good evidence, to beoccasional causes of atrophy of the part in question. The serous covering of the testis, the tunica vao^inalis, is liableto be attacked by acute inflammation^ either
