Title |
manilla terminals |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy 'manilla' in the form of a small penannular arm band or bangle made up of a curved rod, circular in section, with expanded and flattened terminals, that are teardrop-shaped in section. The terminals are 15.3 mm in length and 13.2 mm in width. The manilla is 140 mm in total length, 7 mm in width and 8 mm in thickness and has a diameter of 57.2 mm.This type of manilla was probably made in Birmingham for trade between Britain and West Africa in the 18th or 19th century, like an example in the Royal Institution of Cornwall's collections that came from the shipwreck of the schooner, the 'Duoro', [Douro (ship, 1839)] en route to Africa and lost with all hands off Crebawethan, Western Rocks, Isles of Scilly on 27th January, 1843. This is to the southwest of the findspot so that it is plausible that this manilla may have also come from that wreck. |
