Am Sonntag, dem 9. Oktober 1955, traf sich ein Großteil der europäischen Leichtathletik-Elite zum Rudolf-Harbig-Gedenksportfest in Dresden, 35.000 Zuschauer sahen packende Kämpfe und im wichtigsten Wettbewerb, dem 800-m-Lauf, einen erneuten Sieg des Dänen Gunnar Nielsen. Eine weitere herausragende Leistung war der neue deutsche Rekord in der 4x100-m-Frauenstaffel, den Motor Jena mit 46,9 Sek. erzielte.
