Summary

[edit]
Description

Manassas National Battlefield Park is the site of two key early Civil War battles, the First Battle of Bull Run of July 1861 and the Second Battle of Bull Run of August 1862. The two battles, which were costly to both sides and ended with Confederate wins, demonstrated that the Civil War was going to be a very long, bloody affair, with no quick victory in sight.

I am at the position of the Confederate artillery for the First Battle. Here, General Stonewall Jackson earned his nickname via his performance in the battle.

The United States of America (the North) eventually gained the upper hand and won the war, due to its superior industrial capacity, transportation network, and naval blockade of the Confederacy. The Confederates, who had started the war in order to break away from the USA, form a new country with legal slavery, and obtain the recognition of European powers, eventually faltered, though bitterness over the slavery era and the Civil War loss makes up the political atmosphere and the racial dynamics of the South even today (including right here in Virginia).
