CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – 911 dispatches echoed the terracotta walls of the Replacement Naval Hospital Project as rescuers were dispatched Dec. 14 for a confined space training exercise executed by various fire departments assigned to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The Navy/Contractor hospital project team has teamed up with John Crook, division chief at Fire Station 1, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton along with Emergency Medical Services, Fire Departments, and Hazardous Materials Units from base to establish an ongoing training program to prepare for real life emergencies.

Communications between the 15 firefighters on scene seamlessly orchestrated the underground confined space rescue and quickly set up equipment for walkout tag-outs to ensuring the utilities were secured. Airway monitoring systems, communication lines, breathing airway equipment, specialty tools, and plans for the extraction of the trapped male victim were established in minutes. Two fire engines, two rescue units, one medic ambulance, and one chief officer supported the operation. Future training with EMS aboard MCB Camp Pendleton and the hospital project will be ongoing until completion of the project 2013/2014.
