rtiary Symptoms. The numerous manifestations of the diseasewhich come under this heading are not so frequentlymet with at this day, owing to the fact that the dis-ease is more frequently treated in a skilful manner. Too often, however, ignorance or carelessness onthe part of the physician or patient results in hideousmutilations and deformities. We see too often the manly form reduced to amass of deformity, the skin covered with a noisomeeruption, ulcers on various parts of the body. Theflattened nose, the rotten teeth, the disgusting breath, the distorted bones, the ghastly and haggard appear-ance, all testify to the carelessness or criminal lack ofknowledge of many an uneducated medical practi-tioner. It is impossible to draw a definite line betweenthe lesions of the secondary and tertiary stages, butthe special manifestations of this period are: I. Certain Skin Eruptions, which have atendency to ulcerate and destroy the deeper layers ofthe skin, so that scars are left after healing.
Text Appearing After Image:
TERTIARY SYPHILIS IN THE HAND.CASE 1103. (189I.) (l80) INHERITED SYPHILIS. l8l The Rupial Sore is characteristic of the tertiarystage. A deep ulcer, covered with a dry crust. Ser-piginous ulcers also appear. II. Gummata—Gummy tumors may develop inany portion of the body. They result in ulcerationand deformity. Periostitis and necrosis affect the bones of theskull and extremities. Iritis is common especially in hereditary form. The testicles often become affected, resulting incomplete incompetence. III. Destruction of various tissues of the body(Amyloid Degeneration). The occurrence of this in the kidney or liver is ofserious import. INHERITED SYPHILIS. Late investigations have proven that either thefather or the mother may infect the offspring. Inthe former case the Spermatozoa carry the infectionto the ovum of a healthy woman, and in the latter theovum is either diseased before impregnation; or thewoman may infect the fetus at any time during preg-nancy, should she acquire Syphilis
