English: Man's influence on the landscape. Just to the south of here is a large electricity distribution centre at Latchmere Green. There are a number of power lines radiating from it, this one to the north-east towards another sub-station in SU6970 847631 from where Reading is served with ever increasing amounts of electricity. Despite a programme to put power lines underground, pylons like these are likely to be a feature of the landscape for many years to come.
Often they cross arable land such as here. This is a crop of barley coming towards the time when it will be ready for harvesting. Beyond, the woodland shows what this area would have been like until 200 or 300 years ago, when rapid changes in agricultural practices led to a reduction in woodland and increased arable farming. Even as recently as 50 years ago this huge field would have been parcelled into much smaller fields. In places nearby such as 1393317 the remains of the former hedgerows can still be seen. |
