Description

This awesome area, where thermal springs flow over colorful cliffs, is located in the extreme northwest of the park. During my only previous Yellowstone visit of October 2000, this area is where I started and ended my tour of the park.

The pillar in front is Liberty Cap, which is a dormant hot spring. The formation in the back is Palette Spring.

Mammoth Hot Springs itself is a well-developed town, its building stock made up of Army barracks back from when the US Army was in charge of national park maintenance. It is only 5 miles up the hill from the north entrance of the park at Gardiner, Montana, which was the traditional park entry and remains the only entrance that is open year round.
