Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Maloney-Rossney House, 235 Sterling Avenue at Tacoma Avenue, Buffalo, New York, July 2021. An interesting example of the architecture of the Arts & Crafts Movement that was all the rage at the time of its construction (1917), the house boasts an exterior of cream-colored stucco and a sprawling side-gabled roof that, in the front, is pierced by a low-slung gabled dormer whose overhanging eaves are bracketed by a trio of Craftsman-style knee braces. The wide arch crowning the dormer windows is echoed by the larger blind arch that features prominently on the first floor. The house was owned for the first three years of its existence by John V. Maloney (1880-1946), who at the time was a young attorney on the rise but later would be appointed State Supreme Court Justice. Then, after a short stint as home of one C. Raymond Lewis, it was purchased in 1921 by Canadian-born paving contractor James Rossney (1867-1929), whose eponymous Rossney Contracting Company proudly boasted responsibility for more than half of the paved roads in the Town of Tonawanda at the time of his death. Rossney's widow Minnie stayed on in the house for another two years thereafter.
