Summary
[edit]DescriptionMalago ouflow, Avon New Cut, Bristol - geograph.org.uk - 1568902.jpg |
English: Malago ouflow, Avon New Cut, Bristol Culverts beneath Bedminster now bring streams such as the Malago and the Pigeon House to their discharge points on the southern bank of the Cut - an artificial waterway dug by Irish navvies in the early 1800s to bypass the Avon and help create Brunel's "Floating Harbour" where vessels arriving in Bristol Docks no longer had to rest on the mud at low tide but could remain "floating".
The streams would previously have been direct tributaries of the Avon but the New Cut was constructed across their path. A substantial (mill) pool at the termination of the Malago came to form the Bathurst Basin which formerly connected the New Cut to the Harbour, near the General Hospital. This was partially filled-in during the Second World War to frustrate any German bombers which might attempt a 'Dambusters style' raid on the Harbour. |
