| Description | Immediately after climbing down the few steps and passing the entrance gate, you climb up again the few steps you saw in the previous picture, to enter the ramparts of the Ananuri fortress. A sharp turn to the right and you are actually on a ledge, about a couple of feet wide with a steep drop to the right, over more steps. I was a tad fearful going onto that narrow ledge, and so stick as close to the wall as possible, even leaning on it, to take this picture of the large cross emblazoned on the facade of the church inside the Ananuri fortress complex. This is the first of the three churches inside the Ananuri comples- the Church of the Assumption. The exterior has some very well preserved relief carvings on its façade, including this large script, and the Georgian script on the walls. Unfortunately, the interior of the cathedral has suffered much loss and not much of it remains. (Kazbegi/ Stepantsminda, Georgia, Sept. 2016) |
