Summary

[edit]
Description

This Golden Maitreya Statue for National Unification is the tallest statue in both Koreas. The gigantic bronze statue of Kim Il-sung in Pyongyang is a distant second.

Since 776, a tall golden Maitreya adorned the grounds of this temple. But in 1867, it was melted down to pay for the reconstruction of Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul. In the 1930s, a replacement statue was started in concrete, but due to the Korean War, work was halted at 80% progress; under the military dictatorship of Park Chung-hee, the concrete statue progress resumed in 1963 and was completed the following year.

The current statue, an identical copy of the concrete statue except for being bronze, was dedicated in 1990, four years after the concrete statue, about to crumble, was dismantled. The gold plating was added in 2000 to wish for a successful, peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula, and also to wish for a successful co-hosting of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The gold plating restored the presence of a golden Maitreya at Beopjusa for the first time in 133 years.
