English: Sigillata found in Mainz. In James Curle, 1917, p. 145, fig. 13. Curle says this about it:
« [...] may perhaps be dated as early as the reign of Caligula [A.D. 37-41], comes from Mainz; it shows a very graceful scroll with ivy leaves; but in the lower zone we have a somewhat conventional wreath combined with leaves and tendrils which forms a framework to small medallions, each containing a figure of an eagle with outstretched wings, and in the spaces alternating with the medallions a couple of leaves and a small bird. The rouletting of the moulding which separates the two decorative zones is an indication of early date. This does not occur on the bowls found at Hofheim. The bowl has no maker's stamp, but it is not improbable that it is from the workshop of Gallicanus, a potter of La Graufesenque. A fragment of a bowl found in Rome bearing his name, figured by Professor Knorr, 1 has much in common with it. » Curle, 1917, p. 145) Français : Sigillée trouvée à Mayence, peut-être datée du règne de Caligula (37-41). Vient probablement du potier Gallicanus, de la Graufesenque. Dans James Curle, 1917, p. 145, fig. 13. |
