But alas! upon reaching Scotland, he learned, that she had justbecome the bride of another. At this time slaves were held by a few families in Bristol, one beingthe family to which the deceased Mrs. McLain belonged. Upon herwedding day one of her wedding gifts was a slave who was to be herservant in her new home. One cold, cruel winter night, years afterthe wedding day, this same colored girl, poorly clad, was sent out intothe sleet and snow to find and bring home the cows of the farm. Aftersearching a while, she came back into the house saying that she could notfind them. Then her master, the dear parson, very severely ordered herback into the storm commanding her not to return until she had foundthe cows.
