| Description | This is the old Hotel Carolina, located on Main Street in my hometown of Sylva, North Carolina. Originally constructed as a two-story structure 2/3rds the width of the current building before 1920, the building was expanded during the 1920s with the addition of an additional section, as well as a third floor, which made it the largest hotel in the town for many years. The building is unique in how it has a central light court topped by a skylight, as well as a light well in the rear between the two sections built at two different times, which was bricked in shortly after construction when it was found to be prone to leakage due to the narrowness and shape, with windows remaining that open into the blocked-off light well that seem to have no purpose anymore. The building used to have two additional features that are now missing. Atop the roof, a wooden penthouse used to stand, which stood tall enough to be visible above the parapet along Main Street, which was removed when the hotel closed in the 1950s; the other feature was a large metal fire escape that was once affixed to the front facade, which was placed on the building during the 1920s due to its size and high occupant load, and was removed during the 1960s or 1970s after the hotel closed and the upper floors ceased to be occupied. One remnant of the fire escape is a “door to nowhere” on the second floor, which once opened onto the fire escape. After the hotel closed in the 1950s, the upper floors were used for storage, while the two lower floors (on Main Street and Mill Street) became home to a variety of businesses, with the most notable being an insurance company that clad the storefront in the newer portion of the building, formerly the lobby, in crabstone during the 1950s, and Sossamon’s Furniture Company, an offshoot of a furniture store from Statesville, NC, which set up shop in town in 1944, moving to the two storefronts of the original portion of the building during the 1950s and remained in the building through at least the 1970s. Today, the building is owned by the McPherson Family, whom are working on renovating the building. |
