Summary

[edit]
Description These are a collection of historic downtown storefronts on Main Street in downtown Sylva, NC, the town I grew up in. Mostly constructed during the 1920s, the town's Main Street was dense, well-preserved, vibrant, and charming. Starting from the first picture, we have the old Jackson County bank on the left, the white structure was constructed around 1926 and originally had arched windows, which were later filled in. Up until around 2015, the structure housed the offices of several banks, but today houses Sylva Insurance, one of the oldest businesses in town, formed in 1925. On the right is the old Farmer's Federation building, which once boasted a two-level porch over the sidewalk when it was constructed in the 1920s. Later housing a 5 & Dime store on its many levels, the building is now home to several tenants including a restaurant on the first level, and houses a vintage avocado-colored elevator from the 1950s. The next set of pictures are two old pharmacy buildings. The building on the left was, for decades, Hooper's Pharmacy, and also housed a snack bar. Constructed in 1923, the building has subtle but interesting brick accents. The building next to it once housed the Sylva Pharmacy, which was the predecessor to the modern-day Eastgate Pharmacy next to the hospital. Today this structure houses a jeweler. These buildings underwent some modernization in the 1950s that saw their windows replaced, but largely remain intact and as they were when built in the 1920s. Unlike many American main streets, Sylva's has been preserved in a more complete state, and today is a vibrant and charming center of activity in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
