Summary
[edit]DescriptionMahishamardini rock cut mandapa.jpg |
English: The Mahishasuramardini rock cut mandapa is a part of the lighthouse complex in Mahabalipuram, some distance away from the more famous Shore temple.
It is a cave temple, dating back to the period of Pallava king Narasimhavarman I (630-668 CE) and is dedicated to Shiva. The mandapa has three important sculptural depictions on its three walls, Somskanda, Mahishasuramardini fighting Mahishasura and Vishnu as Aanantasayi. This sculpture represents the victorious moment of the divine battle frozen in time. Even the lion captures the expression of powerful fight. It is a remarkable sculpture showing grace and virility. |
