English: Indonesia and Malaysia Discuss Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia

President Joko Widodo held a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad at the Presidential Palace in Bogor on Friday, June 29, 2018. Prime Minister Mahathir's visit was his first official visit to an ASEAN country after he was elected as Prime Minister in May.

During the meeting, President Jokowi and Prime Minister Mahathir discussed various matters, including bilateral issues between the two countries as well as regional and international issues. Both countries also share a common commitment to good governance, combating corruption, the importance of connectivity, and resolving issues related to borders.

"One by one, we will start discussing these in ministerial-level forums. We also talked about collaborating together on border issues so that both Malaysia and Indonesia can benefit," said the President during a joint press statement at the Teratai Room, Presidential Palace in Bogor.

In addition, they also discussed the protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI). The President entrusted the welfare of Indonesian citizens and workers residing and working in Malaysia, including the education of their children.

Another issue discussed was the cooperation between the two countries to combat discrimination against palm oil. As the two largest palm oil producers in the world, the cooperation between the two countries is crucial to combat all forms of discrimination against palm oil.

Separately, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stated that Indonesia and Malaysia will fight together against palm oil discrimination.

"Indonesia and Malaysia account for more than 80 percent of palm oil production. So far, we have been working together with Malaysia to fight against palm oil discrimination. This was reiterated by the President, so we can join hands with Malaysia to combat discrimination against our palm oil," said the Foreign Minister.

Meanwhile, on international issues, President Jokowi and Prime Minister Mahathir discussed the South China Sea issue. They both agreed to prioritize dialogue based on international law.

"We share the same commitment that the resolution through dialogue based on international law will be our priority," added President Jokowi.
