English: Chhattisgarh and Telangana hosted major groups of temples and stupas in the 1st-millennium and early 2nd-millennium. These Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments survive largely in ruins, with a few exceptions of partial or remotely located structures in forested areas. Some of these have been restored or uncovered by archaeological excavations since the 1960s.

The Mahadev temple in Deo Baloda is made of red sand stone, exquisitely carved with reliefs of legends of Hindu Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism traditions, as well as those from the epics – Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The temple is relatively small and its spire (shikara) is missing. The artwork show signs of both natural erosion and intentional damage (cut faces, chopped limbs or noses or breasts etc). On the outer walls are small reliefs in five layers. The lowest layer are marching elephants (Gaja), the layer above it are the lions, next to which are reliefs showing soldiers as well as scenes of culture: artha (work, dance, music) and kama (love, sex). Two larger parallel layers at the upper outer wall are also sets in squares, each pictorially presenting a legend and deity. These include Krishna, Vishnu, Durga, Parvati, Shiva in different forms (Bhairava, Tripurantaka), Ganesha, Narasimha, Radha, Lakshmi, Vamana-Trivikrama, and others.

The temple faces east, is raised above the ground. Stone stairs lead to the temple's square mandapa with pillars, which leads the devotee to the square sanctum. The temple mandapa has three entrances and the pillars are also carved with artwork from the three major traditions of Hinduism.

The temple stands next to a water tank and midst trees.
