English: Magus Muir, Covenanter's graves This now tranquil spot saw the murder of Archbishop James Sharp on May 3rd 1679.
At the time this was by the main road into St Andrews from the west. Sharp was returning home to St Andrews with his daughter after a visit to Edinburgh. His coach was overtaken by Covenanters near this spot. They thought it was the Sheriff's coach. Sharp was an even bigger prize and much hated for changing sides in this religious war. He was murdered or assassinated depending on which side you supported, either way he was dispatched to his maker with speed. This small graveyard contains the remains of five Covenanters. They had been captured after the battle of Bothwell Brig and refused to take a pledge not to rebel again. They had little or nothing to do with Sharp's death but were hung here anyway and buried in this plot. Just few metres from the site of Sharp's demise. |
