The records of Westminster hall showthat Matthew Marvyn having takenthe oath of allegiance and supremacyas also, being conformable, etc., waspermitted to embark. Matthew Mar-vyn was one of the original proprietorsof Hartford, Connecticut, and wasamong the pioneers in the settlementof Norwalk, which he represented inthe general court in 1654. From thispilgrim stock Mr. Marvin inherited theenergy, courage and broad views whichhave contributed to his prosperity andpopularity. Mr. Marvin spent his boyhood on afarm, receiving a good English educa-tion, but soon found the field of agri-culture too narrow for one whose cap-ital consisted i)rincipally in his businessabilities and enterprise. In 1830 the growing reputation ofSaratoga Springs attracted his attention,and believing it offered a promisingfield for success, he removed thither,and from thenceforth it became thehome of his choice.
