Summary
[edit]DescriptionMaes-y-mynydd (3) - geograph.org.uk - 1262560.jpg |
English: Maes-y-mynydd (3) This was the upper row of houses, several individual dwellings are apparent in what remains. They would have been one-roomed cottages such as described by John Miles Thomas in his memoir 'Looking Back, A Childhood in St David's Eighty Years Ago' (pub. 1977). He was born here in 1889, his father being a farm labourer locally.
"The occupants [of Maes-y-mynydd] kept sheep, farmed smallholdings and one case fished for dogfish in the cold, steep bay of Y Gesail Fawr by shooting a line across the inlet, then hauling a baited line from one side of the bay to the other. Mrs Dinah Morgan bought cutlets of dog-fish to town to sell, in a linen-covered basket." |
