Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Maes-y-mynydd (12) The winding lane, outlined by its lichened walls, served as a access to the bay of Gesail-fawr where the villagers tied up their boats. The products of the sea, along with the potatoes and kale that could be coaxed to grow, must have provided only a meagre livelihood which would have to be supplemented by day-labour for the local land-owner or migration to industrial South Wales. No wonder that the "Road to America" provided an escape route, real or daydreamed, from the penury of the land here just as in all other far-flung shores of the Celtic fringe.
