Description
English: The European Council met in Madrid under the Presidency of Felipe González, Spanish Prime Minister. Followed by a meeting of Heads of State and Government and Foreign Affairs Ministers of Associated Countries of Central and Oriental Europe, including the Baltic countries, as well as Cyprus and Malta. The European Council considered that job creation is the main objective for the EU and has declared its’ intention to pursue all measures necessary to reduce unemployment. Moreover, the European Council has adopted the scenario for the introduction of the single currency and has confirmed that this phase will begin on 1 January 1999. The decision has been taken to name the new currency “euro”. Lastly, the Council has discussed the subject of the intergovernmental conference and of enlargement.
