Summary

[edit]
Description Built in 2006, this contemporary building was designed by César Pelli to house the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, founded in 1901. The museum is part of the Overture Center for the Arts, a large Fine and Performing Arts complex that takes up an entire block and houses several theaters and the contemporary art museum, as well as incorporating the facades of two historic buildings on State Street. The museum is situated on a wedge-shaped portion of the block, with the prominent acutely angled corner being clad in glass with a cut-away portion that tapers from the bottom to the top, concrete floor plates and columns that are expressed on the exterior of the building and frame panels of cream-colored brick, narrow ribbon windows along the entirety of the State Street facade and in a staggered arrangement along Henry Street, large storefronts on the first floor along State Street that connect the museum’s interior to the adjacent public right of way, a rooftop terrace with planters, with the triangular upper portion of the roof cantilevering beyond the edge of the third floor and partially sheltering the terrace. Inside the glass-clad area at the corner of the building is a three-story atrium with glass stairs, railings, and cantilevered balconies that appear almost to float in mid-air, with the stairs featuring trapezoidal landings that accentuate the point at the narrow end of the building, and unify the three floors of the structure into a single interconnected space. The building is the heart of the arts community in Madison, and is a significant anchor on the eastern section of State Street, as well as the west side of downtown. It is run by a non-profit organization.
