Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Union supporter Madison Cate visiting with his wife and child at the Knoxville Jail in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA on December 27, 1861 at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War. Cate, who was from nearby Sevier County, had become very ill, and thinking he was dying, Confederate authorities allowed his wife to visit him. William "Parson" Brownlow, who looks on through the doorway, described the scene in his book Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession, writing that he hoped he may "never look upon such a scene again."
