Summary
[edit]DescriptionMadeira Drive - geograph.org.uk - 1117554.jpg |
English: Madeira Drive Built in 1872 to replace the previous Esplanade to the Chain Pier. Its original route followed the road to the left up the slope known as Duke's Mound to rejoin Marine Parade at the top. However, in 1896 the road was extended eastwards along the route to the right towards Black Rock whilst the original route was renamed after the slope it traversed. The colonnades to the left were added between 1890-97 and extend from the Aquarium all the way to Duke's Mound. Beyond the parked car on the left built into the former cliff face are the offices of Volks Railway. The traffic calming measure in the foreground is to prevent boy racers speeding up and down the road when others are about, the long flat, straight road has often been used for speed trails and the occasional drag race as well as being the finishing point for any motorised run from London and the odd Tour de France stage. |
