Alexander Hobbs Main at work in the print room at Morrison and Gibb's works at Canonmills. In 1837 William Oliphant, an Edinburgh bookseller, founded Morrison & Gibb under the name of William Oliphant & Co., which was changed in the following year to William Oliphant, Junior & Co. In 1841 Mr. Gibb took over the business along with Dr. Thomas Murray, and the company name changed to Murray & Gibb. Another name change took place in 1879 when Mr William Oliphant Gibb entered the business, and the firm was renamed Morrison & Gibb. The firm started off in George Street. However, expansion of the firm led to a move to Thistle Lane and finally the Tanfield Works in 1887. The firm amalgamated with Messrs. Scott & Ferguson in 1896, W.& A.K. Johnston Ltd in 1928 and Mould & Tod Ltd in 1932. Edinburgh City of Print is a joint project between the City of Edinburgh Museums and the Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE). The project aims to catalogue and make accessible the wealth of printing collections held by the City of Edinburgh Museums .
