Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The giant white-washed rock "M" for Montana State University, on the west slope of the southern ridge extending from Mount Baldy (8,914 feet/2,717 m) in the Bridger Range. Near Bozeman, Montana.

The 250-foot-tall "M" was built in 1915 by Montana State University students. After the establishment of Bozeman High School in 1936, a 250-foot-tall "B" was built next to it. The B has fallen into neglect; although it still exists, it is no longer whitewashed, vegetation has overgrown it, and it is no longer visible from the valley below.

The M, too, fell into disrepair in the 1980s. But the former director of the MSU Agricultural Cooperative Extension Service, Torlief S. Aasheim, resolved to have the tradition of maintaining the M restored. Aasheim paid to have the vegetation removed and the M repainted, and he encouraged students to refurbish it annually. Maintaining the M is now done each year the weekend before football homecoming. There is also an "M Run" mini-marathon each year up the side of the mountain and down again.
