Description

Stamp of Negeri Sembilan (British Malaya); 1949; definitive stamp of the so-called "Coconut issue"; stamp drawing with the coat of arms of Negeri Sembilan before a brick wall in oval flanked by two coconut palms; stamp postmarked in Seremban, 1955
Note: The nine rice (padi) stalks in the coat of arms represent the nine Minangkabau districts of Negri Sembilan. The Minangkabau people of Sumatra was the first settled permanently in Negri Sembilan in the 14th century. This immigrant Minangkabau have planted as first people in Malaysia rice in narrow side valleys with streams. The star with nine points signifies the nine Minangkabau districts too, the staff represents the "Yang di-Pertuan Besar" (royal title of the head of state), and the sword and scabbard represents justice. However, Negri Sembilan is the only royal state in Malaysia in which the ruler is elected (by a council of territorial chiefs) and not determined hereditary. Probably is this the reason, why the state’s coat of arms is shown on the stamp issue instead of a portrait of a single ruler. To the time of the "coconut issue" was the ruler of Negeri Sembilan: "Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad" (1895–1960) with the title of a "Yang di-Pertuan Besar".

Printer Originally the "Coconut-issues" of the Malay States were printed at "Thomas De La Rue and Company Limited, London". However, the printery building of "De La Rue" in London was 1940 at a German attack complet destroyed, so that the production of further issues of the "Coconut issues" for Selangor and Singapor (and probably also other) were outsourced to "Harrisons and Sons" (most issues) or other British printeries.
