Summary

[edit]
Description Newly built Red Funnel ro-ro ferry Red Kestrel on its way from Cammell Laird shed to the wet basin. It wan't "launched" but "floated off". The vessel was placed lengthways along the slipway and the rising tide came up to float it - the two tensioning tugs moved her away and on into the wet dock. I arrived at the Pier Head in time to hear the two cannon salute indicating the boat had launched but not early enough to see it "float off". Other than being launched "on the tide" there was very little information as to the exact timing. After work in the basin and trials the ferry will work the freight service between Southampton and East Cowes.
