English: GRAVE OF MOLLY PITCHER – HEROINE OF THE BATTLE OF MONMOUTH. SHE WAS BORN MOLLY LUDWIG OF GERMAN HERITAGE. SHE MARRIED CASPER HAYS WHO DIED AND SUBSEQUENTLY MARRIED WILLIAM HAYS, PROBABLY CASPER’S BROTHER. DURING THE BATTLE OF MONMOUTH SHE BROUGHT WATER FOR THE SOLDIERS ON A VERY HOT JULY DAY AND WHEN WILLIAM WAS WOUNDED SHE ASSISTED IN FIRING THE CANNON. AFTER WILLIAM DIED IN 1787 SHE MARRIED JOHN MACCAULEY, AN IRRESPONSIBLE MAN WHO BROUGHT FINANCIAL DECLINE TO THE FAMILY. MOLLY DIED IN 1833 |
