English: MMRPCs (Multi-strip Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers) have an improved time resolution compared to ordinary RPC detectors. The gas volume is sub-divided by resistive plates into multiple gaps for decreasing the region where primary ionization takes place (grey areas). Thus, several avalanches in the gaps induce a signal in the electrodes. Additionaly, the electrodes are segmented into perpendicularly orientated strips (Multi-strip) for the spatial information.
Deutsch: MMRPC-Detektoren (engl. für Multi-strip Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber) besitzen im Vergleich zu gewöhnlichen RPC-Detektoren mehrere Sub-Volumina (Multi-gap), die durch Widerstandsplatten abgetrennt sind. Dadurch wird eine Verkleinerung des Volumens, in dem primäre Ionisation (graue Bereiche) stattfinden kann, und somit eine bessere Zeitauflösung, erreicht. In jedem dieser Sub-Volumina findet Gasverstärkung durch Lawinenbildung statt (dargestellt in blau). Zudem sind die Elektroden in Streifen unterteilt (Multi-strip) und um 90° gegeneinander gedreht, um die Messung des Durchquerungspunktes des Teilchens zu ermöglichen. |
