Description
English: Master pendulum tank of a Shortt Synchronome astronomical regulator clock, the most accurate pendulum clock ever manufactured, invented by William Hamilton Shortt in 1921, in Musée International d'Horlogerie, La Chaux-De-Fonds, Switzerland. This kept time with two pendulums; the master pendulum shown here and a slave pendulum in a nearby clock unit electrically connected to it. The copper tank was evacuated to 20 mm Hg to reduce aerodynamic drag on the invar master pendulum, increasing its accuracy by 4 times. The clock had an accuracy of considerably better than 1 second per year.
