| Description |
Malta was defended by the feudal lord’s personal retinue and the militia. All Maltese were obliged to become members of the militia and be on constant alert for any eventual corsair attacks. Unfortunately Malta was continuously attacked by these fearsome Moslem corsairs who were after pillage and slaves. There were specific points all around the island where specific detachments of members of the ‘Dejma’ which is another name for the militia would congregate in times of attack. It was a very well organized unit and this is very eruditely described in Professor Wettinger’s book about the militia, in this book he lists all those eligible, the weapons they had to provide and under what exceptions exemption from service were given.
