Summary
[edit]DescriptionMDINA (3471163214).jpg | Like most medieval streets in such towns as Mdina these would be narrow and twisting. According to some historians this was done on purpose, first to make it difficult for and invader to find his way in through the maze of meandering streets and cul-de-sacs. Another plausible reason might be to keep the streets cool under the searing summer sun that is so common. There were changes in the sixteenth century as regards to the defence theory; the new idea was to construct cities using the grid system. In Malta we have two excellent examples namely that of Malta’s capital city of Valletta and that of Paola built under Grandmaster De Paule. The grid system could be used to cut off any intruders in specific centres and deal with them piecemeal. |
