Français : Arles (Bouches-du-Rhône, France), au musée départemental de l'Arles antique, statue d'Harpocrate, en calcaire des Bois des Lens (région de Nîmes), premier siècle, découverte le 28 janvier 1841 dans une maison au sud-ouest de l'amphithéâtre.
Représentation du dieu d'origine égyptienne Harpocrate, fils d'Isis, d'aspect juvénile et potelé, portant toge, manteau et sandale avec un déhanché évitant frontalité et symétrie. L'avant-bras droit, lacunaire, plaqué le long de la poitrine et remontant vers le visage, permet de deviner que le dieu portait l'index de la main vers sa bouche. Le geste traduisait l'enfance dans l'Égypte pharaonique et faisait croire, dans le monde gréco-romain, que le dieu symbolisait le silence, taisant des secrets qui ne pouvaient être révélés aux profanes. L'avant-bras gauche porte, serrée contre le corps, une corne d'abondance, attribut grec, mais introduit en Égypte dès les débuts de l'époque hellénistique, d'où s'échappent des feuilles de vigne, des grappes de raisin ainsi, peut-être, qu'un épi de blé. Elle représente les bienfaits apportés par la crue du Nil. La tête manque, qui aurait permis de voir la chevelure bouclée du dieu avec par-dessus, sans doute, une couronne d'origine égyptienne et un lotus. Harpocrate représentait ainsi le démiurge issu du lotus jailli des eaux primordiales. |
