Description

Philip Johnson said once that his inspiration was New York's Chrysler Building, but the Bank One Tower is separated from its environment. With no street level retail, and the lower floors occupied by a gigantic trading floor, the building puts out a very ritsy and corporate flavor. The entrance features a huge vaulted atrium and skylight, leaving a very airy and natural space on the lowest floors. The east side of the building has a small concrete-clad plaza, full of cigarette butts and pigeons. This photo shows the tower almost finished (personal archive).

The old Mercantile building, which would soon be abandoned, is on the right.
