English: Continuing the prototyping of the project MARTI roof rack system for the Toyota 4Runner.
Instead of long racks that are difficult to get past the shark fin at the back, this evolution of the design features discrete plates, two per crosspiece, which can be deployed more flexibly. This design can also be flush-mounted against the side rail, and can use carriage bolts (as shown here) or a custom "shuttle nut" that is installed inside the side rails. These plates are steel, but now I don't think they have to be. Steel is heavy and it looks like aluminum would work just fine. At the front and the rear are cantilevered extension brackets that lengthen the overall rack assembly. The little hook loops built into some brackets to accept tie-down straps are visible here. The next version, with a modified design for the brackets, in aluminum, should be the final one. |
