Summary
[edit]DescriptionM20 recoilless rifle near Oet'ook-tong, Korea, 9 June 1951.png |
English: Pfc. Roman Prauty fires a M20 recoilless rifle with the assistance of his gun crew near Oet'ook-tong, Korea, in support of infantry units directly across the valley on 9 June 1951. According to a quick research at NARA, R. Prauty served in Company M, 3rd Battalion, 31st "RCT", 7th Infantry Division. A typo was most likely made by the photographer, since Regimental Combat Team 31 'Task Force Faith' was inactive by 1951. Prauty most likely was a part of the 31st Infantry Regiment, which by the date this photograph was taken had advanced to central Korea to restore the initial border along the 38th Parallel. By the war's end, the unit had suffered many times its strength in losses, with 5 Medals of Honor awarded among its ranks. I had many difficulties determining the location of the picture, often incorrectly reproduced as 'Oetlook-tong'. I found it on a US Army map from 1953 that shows it existed near the Sanyang-ni river, in a village now called Bucholli-gil, near the border that divides North and South Korea. The document states it was destroyed during the war. Coordinates are 38°11'07.4"N 127°40'23.4"E.
