"Harbin was the principal norther Manchurian center for the collection and distribution of furs and skins, while Shenyang was the principal center in the south. Around December of each year foreign buyers would come to Harbin and Shenyang to buy the above mentionend skins [tigers, bears, sables, squirrels, otters, beavers, marmots] plus those of dogs and ponies.
The Jewish fur traders included B. Goldman, the Brenner brothers, Gold, Gutbezahl, Zondovich, and Ullman. Some traders, like Lev Jacobson, had offices both in Harbin and Tianjin. Others worked for American Jewish firms such as M. Bernstein and Sons, which was based in New York but has branches in China and Japan.
