Dear Miss Longfellow,
The two Christmas packages arrived all safe and in due time.
Neither Tatiyopa nor Mattie Walden is here this year, but we have assigned two students in their places. You remember Thomas Wildcat Alford, one of our first Indian graduates, whose tuition you provided during his stay here. He has a little son with us now, Pierrepont Alford, and long ago we had decided that as Tatiyopa's place was vacant, me would give it to Pierrepont. He will write his scholarship letter this month when the rest of his class send theirs.
In Mattie's place I have put Lovey Galloway, one of our new girls. She comes, I think, from North Carolina and thus far seems promising in both scholarship and character. She was greatly pleased with the pretty workbasket [p. 2] you sent her. Her class will write their letters during the winter. And then she will tell you about her home and family.
Pierrepont was greatly pleased too when I handed him the box on Christmas morning. I have not seen him since he opened it
With many thanks for your kind thought of these students,
Very truly yours,
M.J. Sherman.
