[printed letterhead: The Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute]
Hampton, Va., May 16th, 1893.
My dear Miss Longfellow,-
At last I send you the Indian scholarship letter. The delay has been because we were uncertain as to whether Bazhaw’s former friend would continue with him. If not we wished very much to assign him to you.
I know of no Indian boy who has improved more than he during the time he has been here - He has improved greatly [p. 2] in character as well as in scholarship. He is a member of our graduating class.
You, of course, know of the sorrow that has come us in the loss of our great leader; and more and more as the days go by shall we come to realize it. It is with special gratitude that I add my thanks to Bazhaw’s for the great interest you have taken in this work, especially since General Armstrong's illness. I know it must have been a com- [p. 3] for to him to know the friends of the cause were rallying around it.
Very truly yours,
M. J. Sherman.
