Description
English: Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is considered an invasive species in Massachusetts. Originally imported as an ornamental, it is quickly taking over wetlands. It is lovely to look at, but unfortunately it crowds out native species, like these cattails. It is a perennial plants and has no natural predators here. Bees love it, as do redwing blackbirds, so it is not totally without merit. When it blooms, some meadows suddenly turn magenta almost overnight. Photo taken in Acton, Massachusetts, USA.
