Summary
[edit]DescriptionLydd, All Saints' church (48860576067).jpg |
Known as "The Cathedral of the Marsh", All saints' church is a large building with a 15th C. western tower which was enlarged to 132 feet high by Cardinal Wolsey (who was once rector). The church is 199 feet long, and could seat 1000 people. Like New Romney, Lydd was affected by the great storm in 1287, destroying its harbour, which was one of the Cinque Ports, started by Edward I. The sea is now several miles away. Parts of All Saints' church date back to Saxon times, some of the original stonework is visible at the north-west end. Some date it to the 5th C. There are north and south aisles with altars at the east end of both. In the 15th C. a number of Guilds were connected with the church, each holding services in different parts. The chancel and eastern part of the nave is Early English, and the western nave is from 15th C. There is a king-post roof from that period. The chancel roof has been restored. The church was badly damaged by a stray bomb in 1940, and the chancel rebuilt in the Early English style after the war. There are 8 bells. The font is mid 18th C. There is a collection of brasses, some wall mounted, others under the carpet, and some monuments to the Godfrey family in the church. |
